On Thursday, October 15, Waseda Saga Junior and Senior High School welcomed the clarinet ensemble Les Pavillons for this year’s Arts Appreciation Day, held in the school gymnasium.

The event offered students not only an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful sounds of the clarinet but also a chance to learn about the connection between musical instruments and the natural environment. Between performances, the musicians spoke about grenadilla, an African hardwood used to make clarinets, its natural habitat, and efforts to protect forest resources through initiatives such as FSC certification. Students discovered how the sounds of familiar musical instruments are closely connected to the natural environments of distant parts of the world.

The program featured a wide variety of music, including classical works by Mozart and Bach, as well as original compositions. The delicate yet rich tones of the clarinets blended beautifully, sometimes coming together as a single melody and at other times weaving around one another in harmony, filling the gymnasium with music.

One student reflected, “I was deeply moved by the beautiful combination of the clarinets’ sounds. I was particularly captivated by Bach’s music, which seemed perfectly suited to the clarinet’s smooth, resonant tones. Learning about how FSC certification contributes to environmental conservation in Africa also gave me a renewed appreciation for the power of music.”

Another student, who had never heard a clarinet performance before, compared the intertwining sounds of the instruments to “climbing vines winding around one another as they grow, creating intricate patterns.” The student went on to describe the experience: “As I listened, my eyes and mind drifted away from reality. When I suddenly returned to the present, I found myself surrounded by the music itself.”

The event offered students a rare opportunity to experience the beauty and richness of live music while discovering new connections between art and the world around them. It was a memorable afternoon that undoubtedly broadened their perspectives and deepened their appreciation for music.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the members of Les Pavillons for sharing their wonderful performances and fascinating insights with our students.
