この夏、早稲田佐賀高校野球部が、熱い戦いを繰り広げました。

　第108回全国高等学校野球選手権佐賀大会。早稲田佐賀は、持てる力を存分に発揮して勝ち進み、見事ベスト4進出を果たしました。準々決勝では龍谷高校を11－4で破り、迎えた準決勝の相手は佐賀商業高校。あと一歩のところで決勝進出には届かなかったものの、最後まで粘り強く戦い抜いた選手たちの姿は、多くの人の心を動かしました。 

　そして今回、何よりも印象に残ったのは、選手たちの活躍だけではありません。準決勝の試合は、終業式の翌日となったので、「選手たちの大切な一戦を、学校全体で応援したい」という思いから、多くの生徒が球場へ足を運び、スタンドから熱い声援を送りました。球場へ行くことができなかった寮生たちは、寮のラウンジに集まって試合を見守りました。そして学校でもラウンジを開放し、パブリックビューイングを実施しました。生徒や教職員、保護者の方々が一緒になって画面を見つめ、選手たちの一球一球に声援を送りました。

　遠く離れた球場で戦う野球部を、学校にいるみんながそれぞれの場所から応援する――。その光景は、まさに「早稲田佐賀が一つになった一日」でした。

　試合は惜しくも敗れ、決勝進出という目標には届きませんでした。しかし、選手たちがここまで勝ち進んでくれたからこそ、私たちは学校全体で同じ時間を共有し、同じチームを応援することができました。球場で声をからして応援した生徒も、寮のラウンジから声援を送った寮生も、学校のラウンジで応援した生徒や教職員、保護者の皆さまも――。それぞれの場所にいながら、気持ちは一つでした。

　野球部の皆さん、ベスト4進出、本当におめでとうございます！そして、本当にお疲れさまでした！

  This summer, the Waseda Saga High School baseball team gave it their all in the Saga Prefectural Tournament of the 108th National High School Baseball Championship.

  Waseda Saga advanced through the tournament with a series of impressive performances, defeating Ryukoku High School 11–4 in the quarterfinals to reach the semifinals. Their semifinal opponent was Saga Commercial High School. Although they narrowly missed out on a place in the final, the players fought with determination until the very end and inspired all of us with their sportsmanship.

  What made this year’s tournament especially memorable was the tremendous support from the entire Waseda Saga community. As the semifinal was held the day after the closing ceremony, many students went to the stadium to cheer on the team. The dormitory students who could not attend in person gathered in the dormitory lounges to watch the game, while a public viewing was also held at school. Students, teachers, and parents watched the game together, cheering for every pitch and every play.

  Although the team fell short of reaching the final, their remarkable run brought the entire school together. Whether cheering from the stadium, the dormitory, or the school lounge, everyone shared the same excitement and pride.
