From July 13 to 24, our school welcomed professors from Waseda University to give special lectures to our high school students. This year, professors from all 13 undergraduate schools at Waseda University joined us and gave lectures on their respective fields of expertise. Second-year high school students chose lectures based on their interests, while first-year students were also welcome to participate if they wished.
Having the opportunity to hear directly from university professors about what they can study in each field and what university learning is really like was a valuable experience for our students and a gave them a fresh perspective of what learning at the university level may be like.
During the lectures, students listened attentively and more than a few shot their hands up during the Q&A times. This experience undoubtedly gave them the chance to reflect on their own interests and consider what they would like to study at university, as well as what kind of future they would like to pursue.
Students tend to worry when they start thinking about their future because many are not yet sure what kind of career they would like to have. However, there is no single career path for graduates of any particular field of study. Graduates from a wide range of academic disciplines at Waseda University go on to work in many different industries, so that is why, rather than worrying too much about a specific career, it is important for them to consider, “What do I want to learn?” and “What would I like to explore more deeply?” when choosing their future fields of study.
Through these special lectures, some students may have found that their, until now, vague interests have become clearer and developed into more concrete goals. For others who have been feeling uncertain about their future, learning more about university life and academic study may have helped them feel more confident as they consider their next steps.
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the professors from Waseda University who traveled to Karatsu to give our students this valuable opportunity. We hope that the knowledge and insights gained through these special lectures will help each of our students make thoughtful choices about their future and take the next step toward achieving their goals while continuing to explore their interests and potential.
