From late May through mid-June, we welcomed back five of our graduates as student teachers for their practicum training.
It’s been several years since any of them have returned to their alma mater, and they were delighted to reunite with the teachers who had once taught and supported them. At the same time, they weren’t just visiting – they spent each day of their practicum experiencing both the excitement and the responsibility of standing at the front of the classroom as teachers.
In addition to teaching classes, they actively interacted with students through homeroom activities and everyday school life. They shared their own experiences from high school and university, as well as their thoughts on choosing a future career path. Their warm advice, offered from the perspective of recent graduates, was received well by the students. The days passed, and strong relationships of trust developed between the student teachers and the students in their classes.
The highlight of the practicum were their lessons, which served as the culmination of their three weeks of training. With guidance and feedback from their supervising teachers, they repeatedly revised their lesson plans, carefully prepared teaching materials, and refined their lessons before the final presentation. Although standing in front of a class for the first time was a nerve-racking experience, each student teacher worked hard to create engaging and easy-to-understand lessons, demonstrating a genuine passion for education.
In a questionnaire completed after the practicum, many of the student teachers expressed their gratitude, writing comments such as, “The three weeks flew by,” “I learned so much thanks to the teachers and students,” and “Being able to complete my teaching practicum at my alma mater is something I will always treasure.”
Messages from all five student teachers are now displayed in the classrooms of the classes they taught. Their students shared their own heartfelt comments at seeing the letters, saying, “I was happy to have so many chances to talk with my senior,” “They helped me with my studies and always encouraged me with kind words,” and “I wish they could have stayed longer.”
We hope this practicum marked an important first step toward their future careers as educators. All of our faculty, staff, and students wish them every success as they continue on their respective paths.
